Being prepared when seconds matter
A choking incident can happen without warning. In just a few moments, an ordinary meal or snack can turn into a serious emergency.
For organisations that care for children, older adults, staff, customers, or visitors, that reality makes preparation especially important. First aid training and recognised choking procedures should always come first, but there are situations where those methods are not enough or cannot be used safely. In those moments, having an additional response option on hand can make a real difference.
The LifeVac Anti-Choking Device gives organisations another way to prepare for these unexpected emergencies. Supplied by PARRS, a long-established UK supplier with more than 140 years of experience, it is used in a wide range of settings to support emergency response plans. As of today, LifeVac has been reported to have helped save 6,375 lives.
Why fast action matters
Choking blocks the airway, preventing oxygen from reaching the lungs and brain. The effects can become severe within minutes:
- 0–4 minutes: Brain damage unlikely
- 4–6 minutes: Brain damage possible
- 6–10 minutes: Brain damage likely
- 10+ minutes: High risk of death
Who may be most at risk
Choking can affect anyone, but some groups are more vulnerable than others.
Care homes and nursing homes
Older adults are often at greater risk because swallowing can become more difficult with age or through conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, ALS, Huntington’s disease, and cerebral palsy. In some cases, mobility limitations can also make standard intervention methods harder to carry out.
Schools and nurseries
Young children are especially at risk because their airways are smaller and they are still learning how to chew and swallow safely. Common hazards include grapes, nuts, hard sweets, marshmallows, large pieces of food, and small objects such as coins or toys. Even in well-supervised environments, choking can still happen quickly.
Hospitality and workplace settings
Busy environments such as restaurants, cafés, and workplaces see large numbers of people every day. If someone begins choking, staff need to act quickly and confidently to help protect customers, colleagues, and visitors.
How LifeVac works
LifeVac is a non-invasive airway clearance device designed to help when standard first aid methods have not worked or cannot be performed.
It works by creating suction to help remove an obstruction from the airway. Because it is used externally, it does not need to be inserted into the mouth or throat.
LifeVac is designed with practical use in mind:
- It is applied from outside the body.
- It uses a one-way suction system.
- It comes with interchangeable masks for different age groups.
How to use LifeVac
In a choking emergency, call emergency services immediately and perform recognised first aid techniques, such as back blows and abdominal thrusts, where appropriate. If these methods are unsuccessful or cannot be safely carried out, LifeVac can be used by following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Attach the Mask: Select the correct-sized mask and secure it to the LifeVac base by pushing and twisting it firmly into position.
- Position the Mask: Place the mask securely over the person’s nose and mouth, with the top of the mask resting near the bridge of the nose and the bottom positioned between the lower lip and chin to create a seal.
- Hold Securely: Use your non-dominant hand to keep the mask firmly in place, maintaining the seal and ensuring the mouth remains open during use.
- Create Suction: With your dominant hand, press down on the handle and pull upwards with a quick, firm movement to create suction and help remove the obstruction. Keep the mask in position throughout the process.
- Repeat if Needed: If the airway remains blocked, repeat the steps as required until the obstruction is cleared or emergency assistance arrives.
