It is often the case that warehouse organisation happens piecemeal over time, with additions and reorganisations happening on a regular basis. However one of the principles of 5S or lean manufacturing is to avoid waste, that’s waste on all fronts; time, labour, energy, resources, etc. and it is bad or out of date warehouse identification that can lead to waste in all these areas. Consider how bays and aisles are identified, how visible and unambiguous these identifications are, how the shelving is marked and what coding system is used to enable quick and effective picking of products. Also consider how easy it will be to change, as all warehouses are a never constant, flexible space and therefore needing ever changing identification solutions to remain efficiently used.
