Guide to selecting Hazardous Substance Storage

It is the responsibility of an employer to provide suitable storage for storage of flammable and hazardous liquids. There is some very useful guidance regarding this on the HSE website.

In an ideal world we would not need to store hazardous substances near an area where people are working. However this is very rarely practical and proper solutions need to be found. The HSE states that, when not in use, containers of flammable or hazardous materials should be kept closed and stored in suitable cabinets or bins which are designed to retain spills.

So how do you work out what is the best way to store your hazardous substances?

  1. Carry out a full assessment of all of the potentially hazardous materials you need to store. It is worth looking at the CoSHH legislation to find out what complies.
  2. Check that you understand that not all hazardous substances can be stored in the same cabinet. Acids and Alkalis just don’t get on!
  3. Some substances might require specialist cabinets, make sure you check the storage of products that can be Bio hazards.
  4. Once you know what you are storing, you will be able to identify the right style of cabinet. Pesticide cabinets will be different from flammables cabinets, which will themselves, be different from Acid cabinets. Therefore you may need a number of different number of small cabinets rather than one big cupboard.
  5. Make sure the cabinet you are selecting is fully CoSHH compliant.
  6. Go for quality every time. We recommend cabinets with welded seams and deep spill trays when storing flammable substances and non-corrosive cabinets when storing acids.
